1840: Census of Laurens District, S.C., lists: Thomas Gray with 1 male, 15-20, 1 male 40-50, and 2 females 5-10.  Sometimes between 1840 and 1850, Thomas Gray married Jemima Inman, born 1815.

1850: Census of Laurens County, S.C., lists: Thomas Gray, age 57, Jemima, 35; John, 25; Jane, 23; Elizabeth, 21. This record, including Jemima as aged 35, implies that Thomas had remarried between 1840 and 1850. If so this would make Jemima the step-mother of John Frederick Gray. If this is true he must have thought well of her since he named his daughter after her.

1851?: Son, John Frederick Gray moved to Bienville Parish, Louisiana.

1860: Census of Laurens County, S.C., Waterloo Township, shows that Thomas Gray was living with his daughter Jane, then married to Josiah Nelson.
