BOOKS BY J. BRUCE EVANS

My writings explore the human pilgrimage toward a better life in the here and now - how we go wrong and how we may correct our errors. My books are about being ourselves, playing our roles, and meeting others lovingly. I have been both a counselor and minister, focusing on what in psychology is called "mental health" and in religion, "salvation." My books have been favorably received by laymen and professionals, often used in university and church classes, plus discussion groups, as well as by individuals.

THE MAN/WOMAN BOOK

Forty points of difference, such as: Men draw lines/women erase them; Women draw circles/men avoid them, are briefly noted and clarified in this witty but insightful book. Its aim is getting past the proverbial Battle of the Sexes and on to Viva la Difference. 96 pp.

READER'S COMMENTS:

"With wisdom, clarity and brevity, Bruce Evans gives you X-ray insight into the opposite sex - into how things look from a male/female point of view.... Yes, Virginia, there are differences between men and women. Now what are you going to do about them? Quick - read The Man/Woman Book!"- Dr. Jody Potts, Creative Thinking Consultant, Dallas, Texas.

"Bruce Evans is always a fresh voice. He brings insights in The Man/Woman Book that have been honed by 30 years of experience. Never one to do things 'by the book,' Evans brings us a book to use in finding our fuller selves." - Dr. G. Avery Lee, Pastor Emeritus, St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church, New Orleans, La.

"With all the magazines I subscribe to, I read about one book per decade. Your Man/Woman Book was 'it' for the 90's. The only problem is it's always loaned out. So, I need 3 more copies . . ."

"In this time of apparent attempts to erase or confuse the difference between the sexes I find your book wonderfully enlightening - and clearly and simply stated. I now see situations more clearly. This not only eases my anxieties but also makes observations lots more fun! - like enjoying the smooth whirl and spin of the current rather than thrashing against the tide."

MILESTONES: Guidelines for the Way

Ten Spiritual milestones - cutting the cord, becoming fatherless, leaving home, divorcing mentally, freeing friends, letting God down, becoming omnisexual, making friends with death, embracing mystery, and risking stringless love - are described with practical suggestions for reaching them. Several stepping stones - learning to feel, think, and see; listening to dreams; having a good time; and learning to do nothing - are discussed as skills useful in achieving the milestones. 180 pp.

READER'S COMMENTS:

"We are ... recommending (Milestones) to our Peace Groups.... Each chapter has a What to Do section, which makes it an important handbook for small groups as well as individuals."- Elizabeth O'Connor, Church of the Savior, Washington, D.C.

"The book has helped me - and many whom I counsel - to evaluate where I am on that road to salvation. I heartily recommend Milestones. . . because it offers support and guidance in reaching emotional maturity and a fuller understanding of Christ's purpose among us."- Claudia E. McDade, Ph.D., Assoc. Prof. of Psychology Jacksonville State University, Alabama.

THE HUMAN ODYSSEY

The major Christian doctrines are translated into the common odyssey of every person. Secular, religious, and psychological languages are correlated in an overall analysis of the human quest for fullness of life. Six major spiritual milestones: losing innocence, falling into hell, dying to self, second coming, judgment, and resurrection are explored as potential events in the here and now. A what-to-do section follows in which confession and repentance are explained in everyday language. 214 pp.

READER'S COMMENTS:

"I am reading The Human Odyssey with great interest . . . having just finished the chapter, Fall Into Hell, I can only say that it is quite extraordinary. Every so often I read a book with the fugitive yet certain feeling that this is going to be important to me."- Walker Percy

"Our time together around The Odyssey is, for most of us the highlight of the week. Very stimulating and very enlightening . . ."

"The Odyssey is just about my favorite, close to I Love The Sun. We are using it for our bimonthly discussion."

BEING CLOSE: A Look at Intimacy

The principles and practice of being close - not just in body or mind but in spirit - are explored. This book is about that special kind of nearness that transforms people into persons, transcends the isolation that is our common lot, erases loneliness, and allows we who are apart to, for a time, be at-one-with each other. Existential intimacy, or standing near of heart, is viewed as the most essential and humanizing of a person's higher capacities. Among 29 topics are discussion of: the threats of closeness, separates together, romance and love, marriage intimacy, loving more than one, keeping secrets, in touch by touching, sexual fidelity, and accepting limits. 168 pp.

READERS' COMMENTS:

"Looking at intimacy is being a special help in this marriage."

". . it's the most satisfying of all your books because the 'withness' experience you analyze and synthesize so well has long been for me the best and most important thing there is. Who says you can't hold a moonbeam in your hand? You do."

In this book, Dr. Evans develops his observations of these errors of understanding and suggests ways of correcting them. Topics include: resurrection, sin, salvation, Jesus, belief, the Bible, marriage, and selfishness. 160 pp.

READERS COMMENT:

"I'm avidly reading Errors, sometimes exclaiming, 'Ha., I knowed it - why hasn't someone acknowledged it before ?I' and other times, 'hey - wait a second; I've got to re-read that and work it through myself. Thanks for stimulating me . . ."
