To be religious at church

check your left brain at the door

and plunge recklessly into your right

Let the symbols, sights, and sounds

lead you down dark paths

through doorways of primal emotions

unfettered by restrictions of reason

into the depths of your secret heart

where even wonder loses itself

in labyrinths of mystery

and sense is forever barred from entrance

Once there, if lighted logic

can be kept at bay,

you may be favored with a glimpse of God

at least his backside

and if twice blessed with blind faith

his blessing mother may grace you

with a saving smile

before they both disappear again

into the silent sounds of an ending Amen

Then, if you dare, you may wisely return

to your whole brain

where sense often reigns over faith

in worlds beyond holy doors
