ANGELS AND DEMONS

              WRESTLING ANGELS

Leaves

    fine teachers that they are

         hang fiercely on

              through every summer storm

         but then let go

               in some autumn breeze

Would that we Jacobs

             could be

                   so wise

*********

    LOVING DEVILS

Killing the devils

       only keeps

             them alive

        only

 Loving the devils

       lets them show

            their angel faces

       and me be human

*********

ADORATION,

    for all its praise,

    is but an easy out

from the wonder of hugging a mirror

    of images darkened by demons.

*********

ANGELIC CIRCUS

Angels ride rainbows

    with their feet

         on the ground

*********

         DEMONIC ANGELS

Angels I have met

        have all disguised themselves as

Demons, at first.

Only in wrestling

do they seem to blow their covers.

*********

    RECALLS AND LAWSUITS

In this era

    of god's demise

    and the devil's banishment

Who's to pray to

             or blame?

Small wonder that we get mad at Bush

                       and sue the government

                       or Goudchaux;

After all,

somebody's gotta take care of us

                               or pay.

*********

      ANSWERS

Answers are fine

       in their place:

at the back of the book,

     like the curtain

at the end of the play,

         the last word

             in the crossword puzzle,

         or a cigarette

              after pleasure.

But idealized into the point of it all

    as in: Making a 100,

           or a million,

           or arriving,

           or having it made,

    idolatry has replaced grace

          and among the losses

                            is

            the kingdom of God.

*********

    COUNTING ANSWERS

Answers do count

       and solutions

But about 10 cents on the dollar

                        I'd say

with 90 going to raising the questions

                 and solving the problems

Unfortunately, though,

               all too often

Answers get to be everything

Which is a hell of a way

      to seek salvation

*********

ANSWERS

Who has

    an answer

    has

    no answer

To live

    is

    to live

with the question

*********

      BELIEFS

    FIGURING GOD

Sense-making

    has many pragmatic values

  such as

    maintaining a semblance

                 of sanity

     in this chaotic universe

It is at least

     a temporary expedient

  until the time of faith

                or death

    whichever comes first

*********

    SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN

Something to believe in

    is an expensive escape

            from believing

     which price, unfortunately,

I am often willing to pay

     without looking at the tag

            which reads:

            Eternal Life

*********

Seeing is not believing

         but believing

      is seeing

*********

Something

      to believe in

is a mistake

*********

         CHALLENGES

         SPIRITUAL CHALLENGES:

-Joyfully building beautiful castles

                         in the sand

while loving the sound and spray

                        of the sea.

    And her tides.

-Dedication to temporal permanence

    while committed to eternal changes

-Saying of death - out there: "That's too bad"

    without ever dropping the "too."

-Saying to death - at bay: "Nay, not yet"

    until its time, then: "Welcome."

-Saying "Yes" to life, "No" to death

    until the time

of speaking out of the other side of your mouth

    then changing your tune without

missing a beat of the grander rhythm.

*********

EVERPRESENT CHALLENGES

I'm Often Not Up To:

Doing rightly

    in the jungle beyond right

Being truthful

in the land past the truth

Answering

in the unknown place beyond answers

Faithing

    in the mystery after faith

Praying

    after the funeral of god

Discovering

    in the kingdom past judging

Trusting

in the company of the untrustworthy

Being friendly

    after freeing my friends

Helping

    in times of my helplessness

Being timely

    in clockless eternity

Going deliberately

    on the path of No-Place-To-Go

Living lustily

in the face of permanent death

Loving anyway

    in the absence of love

    But not when I'm saved

*********

CHALLENGE

    of course

  calls for being

But the greater challenge

    is being

  without a challenge

The first

    requires courage

  the latter

      faith

*********

     DEATH

THE DEAD

We honor the dead

    not because they matter

    (the flowers are plastic)

    but because we need them

                to remind us

in the time of our sin

That life matters

             and

Still there is a chance

*********

         FAITH

FOR MEN ONLY

Challenge,

      of course,

          calls for being

But the greater challenge

                is being

      without a challenge

The first

    requires courage

The latter,

     faith

*********

TRANSLATION OF ROMANS 1:17

Talking about it's fine

I do it for a living

But the main thing

       is doing it

When I have the nerve

          for living

          I do it too

*********

    HERE AND NOW

Escape from faith:

    Before you know it

           you're talking about

                         forever.

*********

         FREEDOM

    AWESOME FREEDOM

Freedom is awesome

          consciously craved

          existentially required

    but in between

          where we mostly live

it is avoided like the plague

The idea is nice

The illusion, tolerable

             but the reality

                     is awesome

    Because, I think,

Freedom takes faith

             and that

              always scares the hell

                          out of us.

Who is prepared

      for heaven now?

*********

GREAT RELEASES

Freedom to be

  in a moment

      beyond

Judging

Tolerance

     for going

With no place

       to go

     Plus the nerve

            to stop

    When

      it's time to

Knowing

   this is it

         and

   that's ok

Not knowing,

    comfortably

God's touch

     through

          you

*********

COMPULSIONS,

even to help, heal, or save

   are signs of sin;

never mind that society & religion

                 call them virtues.

In Christ,

      we are free;

if you "have to...,"

    no matter what,

         you are still not

                    in Him.

*********

    BAD SMELLS

TRUTH,

    for all its praise,

                   and

FREEDOM,

    its handmaiden,

stink.

    The smell of social virtues,

        like our own shit,

    has been so long learned

that the heady aroma of reality

    offends our well trained noses.

And smell

    more primal than thought

         dictates our actions

Even when we know better.

*********

    TRANSCENDENCE

Some transcendent times

    I escape the half-truths

                     of each

                         and

      bridge the chasm

               between

Predestination and Free Will

*********

         GOALS

         WILLING

What will I do

    knowing I do not know

  yet choosing to see

     without escaping into

             should/ought or

             they want me to

  is what, I have found,

          the kingdom of God

              to be all about

*********

    HURRYING

To speed

   is to pretend you have

         somewhere to go

   which is a dangerous

               illusion

    in the kingdom here

*********

GOD KNOWS

God knows

    I think

    as He goes

But even God

    being free

    may not know

Where He is going

For sure, I,

    when I am,

Don't

*********

    MOVING & STOPPING

Faith

    I often fail to muster

  always with temporal relief

         and eternal loss:

 To move when Spirit does

         and to stop

      when She doesn't

*********

         ANYWAY

I cannot be impatient.

    That is an escape

         from the faith required

         to accept forgiveness

             for the sin

                of omnipotence

    Which is to say

             to be

But often I try

           anyway

*********

CONTRIBUTIONS

Making a contribution

        is essential

Outside of Eden

Back in

Being here

   is more

      than enough

*********

      GOD

BEING

   is God

To be

   is to know God

*********

GOD, WHO?

God, at first glance,

    appears as a magician,

         The Essence of Non-Reality.

God, on perusal

    becomes creating,

         the ultimate in reality.

*********

    PLEASING

A wise infant

    is behooved

     to please mother

Adults equally wise

      are behooved

           to go on to God

*********

         INVENTIONS

We men, I think, invent gods

  (and all lessor explanations)

To help us contain mystery:

    At least then,

       there is one final answer.

*********

         GRACE

The art of Grace

    is to accept being accepted

As we are

   without losing the vision

Of who we may become.

Otherwise it is a misnomer

    for laziness

Cloaking sin in a bad case

    of self-righteousness

*********

GRACE

   is the gift

   of taking one step

            at the time

     each in the face

          of the unknown

      discovering meaning

          in the event

      rather than out there

                or in here

*********

    ODE TO PURE GRACE

I know now

      why you scare me so

  Mostly I speak.

        I'm comfortable there.

    But you call me

         you call me forth

          you call me

              to the faith required

              to practice what I preach.

I am at home

       speaking myself

    but you dare invite me

                 to become

                  who I am

    So naturally

          I fear

                and love you

                    Pure Grace

*********

         HEAVEN

    HEAVEN

    is the ever-present

          mysterious realm

    beyond should and ought

          anything to prove

          the need to impress

          anyone to save

          anywhere to go

          any hurry to get there

      and, of course,

             judgment -

          that terrible creator

               of hell on earth

*********

    CONSERVATIVE LAMENT

He wanted to go to heaven

                     but

He didn't want to die

              to get there

*********

    STILL HELL

Being with anybody

      is heavenly

     With anybody

         not being

                is

        still hell

*********

HEAVENLY PARADOXES:

To be faithful

    one must abandon the faith

Being truthful

    requires giving up the truth

True believers

    have no beliefs

The godly

    have no gods.

*********

    PLAYING

Bad news for players:

    winning, regrettably,

         is not allowed

              in heaven

But there's good news too:

    losing is also

         banished

*********

    SPENDING AND SAVING

In the kingdom of man

    careful saving is a virtue

In the kingdom of God

    joyful spending

           gets the greater nod

One challenge of salvation

thus becomes to hang on for men

           while letting go for God.

*********

WITHOUT DREAMS

Without dreams

    there is no heaven

  life grades down

      from existence

        to hell

But dreaming

    I do well to remember

                    that

     a dream is

             just

    a dream

    a shape awaiting

      substancing

  Else

    I lose the simple

                  joy

   of "mere" existence

         in the cloud

                   of

                my own

              fantasy

*********

SOMETIMES

Friendly speculation

    on what is what

               sometimes:

Morality is a cloak for "Can I stand..."

Truth is not-knowing if I can

Faith is seeing if I can

Fun is the process of finding out

    Heaven is discovering "Yes"

*********

SYNONYMOUS DOUBLE TALK IN HEAVEN:

    Nothing matters;

    Everything does.

    Nothing is sacred;

    Everything is.

    God is;

    I am.

*********

         HONESTY

"Honesty is the best policy"

but

 always "telling the truth"

isn't.

The former pays off:

    its heavenly.

The latter leads,

    all too often,

    to pride plus

    foot-in-mouth,

which is a hell of a way

to try to walk through life

with your feet on the ground.

*********

    TRUTH TELLING

Telling the truth

    is often an easy out

    from being truthful

A truth not big enough

    to include a loving lie

Is too small

    to set one free

*********

VIRTUES

sometimes lost in other virtues

               turned to vices:

    Thoughtfulness

                in honesty

     Consideration

                 in dedication

      Attention

              in loyalty

       Tenderness

                in faithfulness

        Growth

             in consistency

         Caring

              in helping

*********

         HUMANITY

    MYSTERY OF GOD

Humanity is

         sensing

          naming

           accumulating knowledge

            planning

    so as to responsibly confront

                      the unknown

    without getting caught up in

                --or using same--

            to escape the ever-present

                           exciting

                            mystery

                             of God

*********

        humanity

Being human

     male and female

     firm and yielding

  is a considerable challenge;

               it takes faith.

Acting like a devil

           a man or a woman

            hard or soft

         is relatively easy; easy;

habit will do it for you.

*********

         OPERATION

There can be no cooperation

     until one learns

            to operate.

            No con-versation

     until one learns

            to make verses

            No community

     until one learns

            to stand apart

            No being with

     until one learns

            to be alone

            No marriage

     until one learns

            to be single

            No heaven

     until one learns

            to be on earth

*********

         'TIS A CRIME

    Against the nature of God

       and the freedom of man

    To be dictated

by the food on a plate

          the length of a cigar

or the end of a trail

    To be human

       is always to choose

            (when you can)

*********

    GODLINESS

Godly humans

     are more tolerable

                   than

Human gods

      and twice as much

                    fun

*********

         JESUS

    TABERNACLES

"Let's pitch a tent

               and stay here,"

       said Peter, James, and John.

            Silently,

                  he left.

    But I think he,

          being human too,

                must also have

                wished to stay.

*********

    BINDING

He came to set us free

    too late he discovered

We only wanted

    better binding

*********

              AFTER CALVARY

Before Calvary, Jesus said:

"Greater love hath no man than this:

that a man lay down his life for his friends."

I fancy that if he had chosen to speak after the resurrection,

when he was living in obscurity outside of Athens

(or was it on the isle of Cyprus?)

in the post-martyrdom phase of his life,

    he might have said:

"Greater love hath no man than this:

that a man take up his life and share it with his friends."

*********

         CHRISTIANITY

Any fool

    including me

  could see the shoe

       no longer fit

but I was too tentatively me

             to risk cobbling

                     just yet

              or too stubborn

                 to ignore the pain

              or too dumb

                 to get another size

              or too afraid

                 of stickers

                 to go without shoes

So I quietly set about

         to redefine the shoe

         Happily

          along the way

                  I met Jesus

                    who taught me

                        to see the naked emperor

                               and

                        to go barefooted

                              with my new shoes on

*********

         JUDGMENT

    DIRTY DIRT

In his kingdom

      which is here

Nothing is dirty

       not even the dirt

*********

         JUDGMENT

    Mistakes and death

       may be "too bad,"

    but, spiritually speaking,

         they aren't bad.

    Helping others and birth

          may "feel good,"

    but neither is

        inherently virtuous.

*********

    BAD FAT

Fat slows you down but

    fat's not bad

If you judge fat

your judgment does more to interfere

With good living

than does your fat which you judge.

    Fat's not a sin;

    Judgment is.

*********

TOLERANCE

      to the intolerable

is easily confused

         with condonement

*********

         EDEN

There is an Eden

      in all our beginnings

                before judgment

And an apple which

      once eaten

      brings Exodus

And longing

Unless and until

       we are graciously

             graced

       with indigestion

            and upchucking

       which allow our return

To this garden

       where we've always been

Sans, now,

     our judgments again.

*********

         KNOWLEDGE

UNKNOWN. . . .

is the way it is.

I may cloak mystery

     with presumption of knowledge

but I do not remove mystery,

     only myself from it

Salvation is the faith

         to remove my cloak

    and stand continually in awe,

              not knowing

          yet responsible for

              being fully here

                          anyway

It's heaven too

*********

    A DANGEROUS TRAP:

    To speak knowingly

          of the unknown

    Substituting quasi-knowledge

         for the faith required

    To face God

*********

MAGIC,

As appealing as it is

    is too expensive

For anyone to afford,

    especially the poor

Who want it the most

    or the rich

Who have already bought it

*********

BEYOND MAGIC

To know

    is to realize

         you don't

   knowing

       is continuing

            to do so

Beyond the magic

      of things

    there is the wonder

             of spirit

Beyond looking

        there is seeing

Beyond good and evil

     there is being

*********

    "Except ye become..."

At first, without information,

           cast into mystery

      we are innocently wise

Then, gathering information,

we begin to cloak the unknown

Until,

with a cup full of information,

       we erase all mystery,

      confusing knowledge

              with wisdom

But if graced, in time,

we see through the fog of pride

glimpsing again the shadows of mystery

And if faithful, we return again

    to where we began,

    innocent once more,

    but sophisticated now

*********

THE FOLLOWING BLISS

The bliss of ignorance

    is readily apparent;

Less obvious

    is the bliss

           beyond knowledge

*********

         LOVE

          HEAVEN

       In orgasm

             one transcends ego

       In love

           one transcends self

           The one

                is the door

           The other

                  is the way

*********

    IN LOVE

"Loving" and "In Love"

        are opposites.

Each excludes the other.

The first is heaven

The second, hell,

    though cloaked

    in gossamer illusions

                 of bliss.

*********

    ENEMIES

War is easier than love

    because it takes skill

             but not faith;

Therefore, when our faith

                  is low,

       we create enemies.

*********

        PRICE

The major cost of love

         is expectations.

Fortunately,

    the reward,

    knowing God,

Is well worth the price.

*********

UNSELFISH LOVE

     is a social myth,

     useful like many others,

  but exceedingly dangerous

     when pursued literally.

Only the truly selfish

     can truly love,

And then it is the highest

    act of selfishness,

           selfishness culminated

Rather than escaped.

*********

DUTY

  is a social virtue

                but

  not spiritually virtuous

Only love is

*********

    POSSESSION

In the kingdom

      you can love

           someone

   but you can't have

              anyone

*********

I LOVE YOU

A Dangerous Place To Be:

Where you need to hear

          "I love you"

Not because honest lovers

     are so hard to find

        (though they are)

but because hearing one

       is so difficult

    without falling into the trap

        of forgetting who you are

                             and

      the everpresent love of God

*********

         KILLING AND CARING

Killing is dangerous

but not nearly so disastrous as

the lost capacity to appropriately kill.

    The greater dangers

are those which emerge in repression

                      of appropriate killing,

        namely, Never Kill (only heal)

                 Over Kill

                Under Kill &

        Inappropriate Killing

Caring is the greater danger;

      it brings the responsibility

                    of killability

*********

    PRESENCE

To be with you

     whoever you are

is to sit at the feet

              of God

Absence is hell

*********

         PARADOX

    PARADOXES

To be faithful

    one must abandon the faith

Being truthful

    requires giving up the truth

True believers

    have no beliefs

The godly

    have no gods

*********

CLASSICAL ERRORS:

-Seeking sanity

    by running from craziness

-Searching for the sacred

    apart from the profane

-Striving for salvation

    by avoiding sin

*********

PARADOXICAL TRUTHS:

-Sanity

    is embraced craziness

-Sacred

    is fulfilled profane

-Salvation

    is sin forgiven

*********

         PLEASURE

Go to hell:

If pleasure scares you

   you won't enjoy heaven now

      cause its

   a hellova (heaven-of-a)

    lot of fun

*********

PLEASURE

For duty

    is good

For pleasing

    is better

For pleasure

    is best

*********

    FOR FUN

For pleasing

    is nice

        and

Better than

      naught

Deserving a "thank you ma'm"

For fun

    and sharing

 is best of all

           and

 calls for thanking God

*********

         PREACHING

Preaching about:

    HOW TO GET WITH IT

        is never so popular as

Preaching about:

HOW TO GET OUT OF IT

IT, of course,

    being HOW-IT-IS:

         Heaven Here.

*********

    TIPS

Preaching Truth

    is like serving caviar

    in an all-night truck stop

    in West Texas.

Don't expect big tips.

*********

    TRUISMS

To traffic in truisms,

    profitably,

One must paint them prettily

        perfume them profusely

        sugar coat them sweetly

Or seriously search

    for one who already knows

And is willing to admit it.

But then what's the point of the trip?

Better to grin together, knowing.

*********

HOPE

   being necessary yet fragile

                seeks symbols.

We preachers,

    being soft-hearted,

    sometimes forget the dangers

         of idolatry

    and make the symbols sound

                         so real

                            that

You parishioners

    had better beware

*********

EASY OUTS:

Evading truth

    by telling it

Saying it

      instead of

 Doing it

*********

         RELIGION

GOOD RELIGION

    is a drama

       a charade

       a form for the formless

       God's joke on himself

BAD RELIGION

    is deadly serious

       a form

         believing itself

         to be the real thing

man's failure to get the joke

*********

         RELIGIOSITY

Good religion is not religious;

it is the essence of secularity,

  not otherworldly

  but the heart of this-world-ism.

*********

         RELIGION AND POLITICS

In their boudoir

      Religion and Politics

           in tandem

have conceived a functional social structure

for containing the power of sexuality

              while perpetuating their union

Unfortunately human evolution

             has yet to conceive

a practical way of being sexual and civilized

                            at the same time

Heaven, yet,

        is to come

         SALVATION

SALVATION

      is bridging the vast chasm

         between how it is

                       and

                 how I've found it

                                to be

                 and proceeding

                     in the mystery

                            joyfully

*********

SWEET SOLUTIONS

     sought for salvation

Turn into Satans

    instead of Saviours.

Jehovah's witness becomes

The Devil's handmaiden.

*********

SIN

 is saving

     face

(and other posteriors)

SALVATION

      Is losing

           your ass

(and other interiors)

    only to discover

     you had nothing

     to save or

     to lose

     to begin with

*********

         GRADUATION?

She "graduated," she thought,

    in the fourth grade,

    from God to Guiding Principle,

  assuming she had become

                  an "atheist,"

Until, 31 years later,

when her 12 year old committed suicide,

         and she found herself guilty

about the limits of her own godhood

and mad at some banished God

she had thought to be long dead.

******************

Now that she has confessed,

    maybe she will also repent

          of her own sin.

Forty one! What a good time

                to be born again.

**********

         AXES

Salvation is knowing how

    to grind an axe

but not having one to grind.

*********

CRAZY THEOLOGY

Going crazy

     sometimes

is the only way

   to be saved

*********

    FAIRNESS

In non-being

    unfairness

    is not allowed

In becoming

    it is often tolerated

          without threat or

                  indignation

     in the larger quest

              for salvation

*********

              NO WAY

Anyone can be saved

    no matter how bad off,

                   far gone,

                    crazy they have become, or

              what they have done,

    if they are still breathing.

But there is no way

    to be saved

Salvation remains by grace

                 through faith.

*********

THE WAY

Knowing the way

            is

Knowing there is

         no way

         no way

             is

        The Way

*********

         SELF

    SELFISHNESS

My fear of selfishness

              must be

   the lack of sufficient faith

                 to be selfish

Because

    to be selfish

          is also

     to be selfless

Since

    when I am myself

I have no self to be

*********

TO BE SELFLESS

       means:

You can't be caught

    with your hair messed up

        your slip showing or

        your pants down

It's okay

    to sweat or burp

             or

    have an accident

         while wearing dirty underwear

    to be early or late

    to mispronounce words

    to forget what's his name

and, of course, to make a fool of yourself

                            once in awhile

    to be human, that is

*********

    GIVERS

In the realm of Spirit

   the receipt

           of a gift

In no way implies

     the necessity

         of a giver

*********

    SPIRITEDNESS

To have a soul

            is

To lose spirit

    Only the soulless

         are spirited

*********

         JUST BEING

Never say "Just being myself."

     Say "BEING myself."

Or, to be more explicit

     Say "Profoundly Being."

Because there is no such thing as:

                   just being.

*********

         SEX

    COVER STORY

Sex

sometimes

  is just an excuse

    for being immanent

          and embodied

               intimate

          and transcendent

  for knowing God,

         that is.

And what a story too

*********

COM-PASSION (With-passion)

    is literal;

Higher love is rooted in lower love.

There is no such thing as passionless love.

Compassion is the apex of passion,

    not its ultimate absence.

*********

    OBSCENITY

Pornography

    for some is excessive

  but it is not obscene

Human godhood

      is the true obscenity

*********

    PROMISCUITY

Caring for the promiscuous

    is as easily confused

    with promoting promiscuity

as is supporting the faithful

    with keeping the faith

*********

POPULAR CONFUSIONS:

Sleeping around

          with

Loving around

Fidelity

    with

Faithfulness

*********

         SIN

SIN IS

    assuming you know something,

                      anything,

    like:

        how it is

        who you are

        what anyone ought to do

                          or be

             including yourself

        what love

             or if God is

             let alone who

    beyond your own

          or commonly shared definitions

          (including what sin is)

When once you've sinned

    as we all apparently do

you plant the seeds of weeds

     like:

         expectations

         judgments

         manipulation

         disappointments

         hopelessness

      in other words, hell

And for all the small delights that go

    with tasting the apple

                of omniscience

    like:

        self-confidence

        pride

        security

        ego

        thinking you're somebody

when the garden gets full grown

on any dark night of the soul

knowing

     is hardly worth the price

*********

    DOUBLE BIND

The ultimate idolatry

         is to take oneself

                    seriously

The ultimate sin

             is not to

*********

              CREATION

God creates;

    humans,

    who don't confuse themselves

                        with God,

    construct.

    They make stuff

                like pies, paintings, & piers;

    they plagiarize ideas,

                    then preach or print,

and are delighted by the muses

                  who call them to build.

Creation,

    however,

         they leave to God.

*********

         PLAGIARISM

In the kingdoms of man

       plagiarism is against the law;

   original creations can be copyrighted.

In the kingdom of God

      plagiarism is accepted;

pretending to be the Creator gets us exited.

*********

         PERFECTION

To strive for perfection

                     is

To strive for godhood

               which is

                  a sin

    So if you win

          you lose

         Seek rather

           to embrace imperfection

                          which is

                          human

         And the only really godly

                             thing

                         to do

                         anyway

*********

LOST TRANSLATIONS

Omniscience,

    unfortunately,

  translates as:

    "Right" & "Sin"

Even less evident

    is its cost:

    Eternal Life

*********

THIN LINE

Sin is stepping over the line

    between Sad and Bad.

*********

TWIN SINS:

    Omnipotence -- Impotence

    Omniscience -- Ignorance

EDEN GIFTS:

Limited power: We can't do everything,

                   or even all we can imagine;

but we can always do something.

Limited knowledge: We don't know everything

                                 about anything;

but we do something about anything

                                              we can name.

*********

              OMNISCIENCE

"That's sad," (as a projection of "I am")

is often heard in the kingdom of God.

But not, "That's bad,"

(which is only heard outside of Eden).

"That's too bad," however, is Okay

    (as a colloquialism).

*********

         TRUST

TRUSTING,

    the kind which counts,

Is not my confidence

       in your predictability

           but in my ability

        to enjoy the mystery

     of your unpredictability

(well, at least to stand it)

*********

         TRUST

Wise ones don't trust anybody

     including themselves.

Instead

they move trustingly among all others

    especially when alone

Reserving their trust for God.

*********

         VALUES

    MATTERING

In the Kingdom:

    Nothing matters more

      than anything else

Which may also be said

    with equal accuracy:

    Everything matters,

                    or,

    Nothing does

*********

    MATTERING

In the eyes of God,

          I think,

everything matters

One event is no more

            or less

    important than another

    the fall of a leaf

                    or

    the fall of a tree

    the birth of a bird

              or a babe

  the breath of a slave

       matters as much

               as that of a king

  smelling a rose

       is as important

          as planting one

          or plucking it up

    kissing and killing

     coping and crying

    farting and fucking

     living and dying

I fancy

    to Him

  it all matters the same

    But then

         not being God

    How would I know

         about stuff like this?

Maybe it's all

          the other way around:

     Nothing instead of everything

Which, of course,

             is still the same.

*********

DAMNING VALUES:

Ashamed of making love;

 Proud of making money.

*********

         VIRTUE

A BETTER QUESTION

  Than

    Is it right?

            is

    Is it good?

  Than

    Is it good?

           is

    Is it true?

  Than

     Should I?

          is

      Will I?

*********

GOOD

Good done

     for ought

Is good

     for naught

Good done

     for naught

Is good

*********

    WHOLLY BEING

You can't be good

    so don't try;

You can be whole

    so strive diligently

            for holiness.

*********

    GOODLY BEING

You can goodly be

    but you can't be good;

Therefore strive for goodly being

but don't try to be good.

*********

    RIGHT AND WRONG

To be

   is to be

      in the kingdom of God

kingdom traffic travels

        between

    error and accuracy

    carefully avoiding

        the side road

    of right and wrong

*********

         BEING GOOD

The problem with trying to be good

                   is not the goal,

    but settling for such temporal

       formulas, like:

                 cleaning your plate,

                                 etc.

Only past such "goodnesses"

    have I ever glimpsed good

And in the presence of God

    goals don't much matter anyway

Since I'm already here.

*********

    REAL SHOULDS

Of 1000's of SHOULDS

    I've known and lived with

Only one, I think, is real,

    the rest are illusions;

One I've never heard

    but happened onto:

I really SHOULD, I believe,

        BE REAL

*********

COULD DO

We create the ought-to's

             for protection from

         the could-do's

             when our faith is low

*********

    HEAVENLY SACRILEGES:

In the sacred land

      nothing is sacred

In Eden

the only evil thing to do

is eat the fruit of the tree

of the knowledge of good and evil

For true believers

    there's nothing to believe in

When truly being

     one cannot be true

               to anything

                or anybody

               except God

*********

      BEING SOMEONE

God knows

    it's easier

         to do something

                    than

           to be someone

       and, unfortunately,

               rewards us

          commensurately

*********

PERFECTION

    Which counts

      instead of

           costs

              is

COMPLETION

    Which is

     embraced

 imperfection
